Is Iran Next?

Entry 117, on 2005-01-18 at 13:19:42 (Rating 3, Politics)

The Bush regime is denying a report by investigative reporter, Seymour Hersh, that the US military is already operating in Iran, presumably in preparation for a later attack on the country. The report claims that US special forces commandos have been operating inside Iran for six months, and are selecting targets, such as nuclear sites and missile installations, for future air raids,

It would be extremely surprising if the Pentagon didn't deny this. First, its very embarrassing that they are carrying out illegal activities (which would have to be close to terrorist in intent) in an independent country; and second, even if they did claim this was a reasonable action, they would want to keep it secret as much as possible.

Because of this, the denials can't really be taken seriously. That doesn't mean the claims are true though, experts seem to be divided on how accurate they are likely to be. The denials seem to take the form of: there are numerous factual errors in the report, as opposed to complete denial, so this might indicate that something really is going on there.

It seems incredible that the US would be contemplating another invasion, after the debacle of Iraq, where the elections are unlikely to be particularly conclusive due to continuing violence. If this is true it would support the claims that Bush, and his leading officials are genuinely dangerous and perhaps even psychologically unbalanced. Either way, this is not good news, and is certain to make the world a more dangerous and politically unstable place.
