The Keynote

Entry 791, on 2008-06-10 at 07:16:46 (Rating 1, Computers)

Well the keynote is over and I was only in the queue about 1 and a half hours early so I didn't make it into the main room. Still, watching it on a big screen in another room in the same building was OK.

I have to hope that Apple haven't forgotten they make the Mac as well as the iPhone because practically the whole keynote was about the iPhone and not the Mac.

But that's OK because the new phone really does look great. All I really wanted was 3G network capability and official support in New Zealand. I wanted GPS too, but that wasn't critical. But getting all of that at such a low price is amazing. US$199 for an iPhone 3G. I'll take one for each member of the family at that price!

I'm pleased to see that New Zealand is one of the first 22 countries (out of a total of 70 supported countries) where the iPhone 3G will be released on July 11 too. I wouldn't have hesitated to hack the phone to make it work on whatever network I wanted, but official support does mean those problems with updating hacked phones, etc can be avoided.

So that's the keynote done. I would have liked to see new capabilities in Mac OS X 10.6 (which will be called Snow Leopard - don't know if I like that) demonstrated and I don't see any sign of new tablet Macs, but we'll see what happens during the rest of the week I guess.
