One of the common parts of a birthday party is the cake with candles, so why not use the candles for light instead of a flash? The problem is getting the exposure right and keeping the subject still for long enough to complete the exposure. The candles here are over-exposed but that doesn't matter too much because the faces of the kids are correct. The red glow is also a more pleasant alternative to the harsh white light of a flash.
