This is an alpine valley off the Lewis Pass road which crosses the Southern Alps in Central Canterbury. The hills in the distance are just foothills of course, the real mountains are behind this photo. Maruia Springs itself is further down the road.
I used a high focal ratio (I guess about f/16) with this photo to get the flowers in the immediate foreground and the hills in the distance both in focus. I also used a low angle (the camera was about 30 cm off the ground) to get that effect.
