I-153 MovieThe I-153 was developed from the I-15 which was introduced around 1933. At the time it rated well against its opposition in Spain. In 1936 the I-152 was introduced and the I-153 followed in 1937. The I-153 had a new engine and revised wing design. Because of the appearance of the wing it was known as "Chaika" (seagull). Various models were built and total production was over 3,400. For the whole I-15 family over 6,500 were produced. Specifications for the Polikarpov I-153 follow. Powered by an 800hp Shetsov M-62R radial engine. Wingspan: 10.2 m (33' 3"), length: 6.1 m (20' 3"), height: 2.95 m (9' 8'). Empty weight: 1,348kg (2,965 lb), maximum weight: 2,010kg (4,420lb). Maximum speed: 444km/h (278 mph), ceiling: 35,100 ft (10,700 m), range: 875km (546 miles). Use the controller above to watch the Polikarpov I-153s flying their display. Listen for the distinctive note of the radial engines - often described as a "Harley on Steroids!" (this requires Quicktime, and is a moderately large movie). I apologise for the poor quality of this movie but it was originally encoded in the "early days" of internet video! |
