Observation: Jupiter Mutual Phenomena

Title: Jupiter Mutual Phenomena
Date: 1997-09-08 NZST
Time: 23.50 NZST
Location: 96 Mornington Road, Dunedin
Equipment: 34 cm Newtonian

Description

Using a 34cm Donsonian I observed Jupiter's satellites.
Observed mutual event 3E2P 99% at 9 radii:
Europa was eclipsed by Ganymede - almost 100% covered.
11.00.00 First noticed darkening.
11.02.00 Totally dark.
11.06.04 First sign of visibility.
11.10.00 Seemed back to full brightness.
Conditions cold and windy.
Used Ashleys 13" Dobsonian with 19mm eyepiece.
Observations for Io emerging from behind Jupiter:
11.50 first sign of Io emerging (top picture).
11.59 Clear space seen (bottom picture).

Thoughts

Jupiter and its system of satellites often provide interesting events to watch. The disk of Jupiter itself often provides interesting detail, especially if the atmospheric conditions are steady, and the satellites (moons) also move in front of Jupiter, disappear behind it, and even eclipse each other (as described in the observation at 11.00 above).
