Coffee and Iraq

The BBC has reported on a case where a teenager was admitted to hospital after drinking too much coffee. Symptoms of excessive coffee use include restlessness, nervousness, excitement, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, and a flushed face; and after a serious overdose the symptoms can extend to delirium and seizures. Personally I suffer symptoms when I don't have coffee, so I'm obviously chemically addicted!

It seems like coffee can be nasty stuff. But anything can be poisonous or dangerous in other ways if too much is taken. That's one of the things that annoys me about people who seem to have idealistic beliefs regarding natural remedies. There's no doubt that natural remedies can be dangerous when taken in high doses just like artificial drugs can. In fact the distinction between natural and artificial products is basically irrelevant because many artificial drugs are derived from natural sources. At least with processed drugs you know what you're getting, especially regarding the strength. And you have some assurance that the product really works!

Actually, the subject I was going to blog about today was the situation in Iraq. Almost 200 people were killed in a recent series of bomb attacks there. That's about the number of political killings in a whole year in the last few years of Saddam's regime. The number of casualties of the war is approaching one million. Just remind me again exactly how Iraq is better off after George Bush's attack.

Polls indicate that the Iraqi people are becoming more pessimistic about the future and they don't have confidence in the coalition forces. Over half think attacks on those forces are OK. Saddam Hussein wasn't the world's greatest leader but maybe he was a necessary evil given the circumstances. The whole thing is a complete disaster but what can be done?

Well its simple really, George Bush has to admit he was wrong and resign. If he had a tiny bit of decency he would. His presidency and his party are totally discredited anyway so why not show a bit of real leadership and give up? Its ironic that his greatest act of leadership would be to stop being a leader. That won't really help in a practical way but at least the admission of fault and a fresh administration will provide the opportunity for a fresh start.

Well that's my anti-Bush rant for another month or two. Now I have to go and get a good, strong coffee!
