Discussion for "workoffice computers other menu owen"Comment by OJB on 2006-07-18 at 10:50:09:
I have recently simplified my server setup. I am now using G4 or G5 Macs for all servers. I have also decommissioned all Mac OS 9 based servers. I have also switched all my SCSI tape drive based servers to large hard drives (300G). These require a lot less administration and are a lot faster and more reliable. When you shifted your backup systems to hard disks instead if tapes what did you do when the hard disks got full? With tapes you can just buy another tape and keep working but with disks once its full you can't increase it any more unless you buy another disk. What is your strategy there? The disks are all installed in pairs. They are big enough that it takes a significant time for them to fill. When they do I switch to the second disk. When the second disk is full I erase and re-use the first disk, etc. Because it takes (for example) 6 months to fill the disk I always have at least 6 months of backup available.
The big advantage is the speed and much lower administration time. I don't have to watch for tapes becoming full once a week (I just watch for disks filling twice a year). And when I restore I just start it and leave it to run. With the tapes I had to monitor the system and load tapes when required. One restore took 25 tapes, and over a day to complete!
