XWorld 2011, 18

On 20 November 1977 Ken Warby broke the world water speed record by piloting this boat, Spirit of Australia, to 464.46 km/h (288.60 mph). He built the boat in his back yard and gradually improved it until he also broke the 300 mph and 500 kph barriers by averaging 511.12 km/h (317.6 mph). The boat uses a J34 jet engine producing 6000 horsepower!
