Kea

The Kea is a unique bird being the only alpine parrot in the world and is found only on the South Island of New Zealand. It is also very inquisitive and playful and is sometimes known as the "clown of the mountains". Unfortunately this playful nature can go a bit far and they have been known to attack wipers and other parts of cars as well as sheep.

We saw this kea at a car park of the Chasm, on the road from the Homer Tunnel down to Milford and they are quite common in the area. They are often quite unafraid of visitors which makes getting close up photos like this a bit easier.
