A Good Debate

Entry 366, on 2006-07-19 at 14:13:42 (Rating 3, Comments)

I love the way the Internet provides such an effective way to discuss different subjects with people from anywhere in the world. Recently I have been involved in a debate with someone which started with him responding to a blog entry I made a year ago titled "Bible in Schools". Even though I am an atheists I defended the idea of Christian teaching in schools because kids can distinguish truth from fiction.

The debate started in the blog discussion area and spread to my new discussion system I have added to my web site. The two web pages were one involving the historical evidence for Jesus existing, and another showing that it is simple to prove that the Earth isn't young as the Bible suggests.

So this person, who runs his own web site supporting the Bible, probably thought I would be an easy person to defeat in this sort of debate. Wrong! I know I'm biased, but I think I won convincingly. Of course the debate may not be over yet, time differences mean it does start and stop a bit.

At this point his only offering regarding the age of the Universe is that god created the Universe with light from distant stars already in transit. I mean, how weak is that! You would have to be really desparate to find a way out of the problem to even suggest such an unlikely explanation.

And when challenged for historical records of Jesus he just dredged up the same old stuff. OK listen all Christians: the writings of Josephus are not a credible record of Jesus' life. The material referring to Jesus as something more than a man were clearly added later by Christians wanting to create a history where none existed.

I am constantly surprised out how weak the case is supporting Christianity. The more I debate it with supposedly well informed people, the more I realise just how deluded they are. That doesn't mean I don't think its worth discussing. After all, there's nothing better than a good debate!
